Chance The Rapper

We’ve been speaking for months about Chance The Rapper and his upcoming debut, #10Day.  Previously we took you into the studio for a preview of the album, and debuted Chance’s last video, “Fuck You Tahm Bout”.  Today we have the premiere of Chance’s new video for “220ffs”, which is directed by Austin Vesely.  The video is pretty wild, and packs a ton of footage into a very small space.  It is sporadic, it’s is jarring, and it is a little bit out there.  We caught with both Austin and Chance, and they filled us in on what it was like making this video.

Austin Vesely:
With a track like “22 Offs” I’d generally be inclined to go for simplicity because it’s so short. In this case I actually decided to go the exact opposite direction, and put a lot of visual information in a short period of time. Chance paints a lot of pictures in this song and it seemed counter-intuitive to not try and bring those to life. Strangely, I went and counted the cuts in the video and subconsciously I cut almost exactly 22 times.

The main aesthetic choice of the video was to use the SnorriCam technique, which involves attaching the camera to the performer. This kept all the shot sizes consistent while the backgrounds and scenarios changed.
