[Interview] Sean Price: Get Busy
RubyHornet: Last time we spoke, I asked about Mic Tyson and you told me it would be the most ignorant album ever. Did you succeed in that haha?
Sean Price: Hell Yeah!
RubyHornet: At what point did you know Mic Tyson was done? With it being the first LP since ’07 and the first solo project since ’09, how did you know it was time?
Sean Price: When Dru said it was.
RubyHornet: This is a very NY style LP, very lyrical. What makes Mic Tyson ideal to drop now, relating to everything else coming out of NY at the moment?
Sean Price: I don’t know. I made the songs. We put them together, I got a release date. I’m sorry man, I don’t have any great answers, I feel like an idiot.
RubyHornet: So when did you start working on it then?
Sean Price: I’ve been working on it for years. And when I first started working on it, I got my wife pregnant for the third time. The pregnancy was kind of high risk, so I really didn’t want to go from Manhattan to Brooklyn, so I stopped recording.
RubyHornet: When was that?
Sean Price: That was two years ago. Then when she gave birth to my daughter I was so excited and shit, I said let me take a year off and enjoy this fatherhood shit, and then I got married too. I married her.
RubyHornet: Congratulations, man. Congratulations.
Sean Price: Thank you bro. I’m just enjoying regular shit. Between that, I’ll have some creative spurts, I’ll do like four songs this week. Then I won’t do shit for two months. By the time it came around I had like 30 songs.
RubyHornet: So if there was one song on the LP you would say was most heavily influenced by either your marriage, or the birth of your child, what would it be?
Sean Price: ”Hush”. I got a song called Hush.
RubyHornet: Why “Hush”?
Sean Price: My daughter was up late one night, and she wouldn’t go to sleep. I kept singing her “Hush little baby,” but then I thugged it out and I wrote a song. Yeah “Hush”.
