[Interview] Hodgy Beats: Find Your Own
Rubyhornet: How does it feel with Numbers about to drop?
Hodgy Beats: I’m on day 6 of MellowHype week. All the feedback is really good with the songs that we’ve been releasing. Personally, I think every song hits on our album. there are no fillers, everything is like ‘smack, smack, smack, oh shit, it’s something new.’ Nothing sounds the same. You’ll never find another “La Bonita” on Numbers.
RubyHornet: Are those songs coming out as part of MellowHype week on the album too?
Hodgy Beats: They’re just give aways. Something people can get hype off when we perform.
RubyHornet: Talk about the record you made today in the Closed Session.
Hodgy Beats: The shit I did today.. I normally just go off of vibes. Sound selection is real big with me because I believe if the sound of the production isn’t right, or it just does’t sound good, you can’t make it sound good. I don’t know. I’m weird with sound selection. You probably could tell on the Untitled EP, and everything that we do pretty much. Even with Numbers, or the songs I’m releasing on MellowHype week, I make sure it’s ‘Damn! This beat is fucking crazy!’ Even if it’s not like a head banger, there still should be something authentic about it. Something original. The goal is not to copy anybody, or imitate, or ‘sound like’, it’s about trying to find your own. I’m trying to find my own sound and my own way. I’m real versatile when it comes to writing lyrics and hitting pockets and all that shit. I’m real into wordplay. I just think it’s great.
RubyHornet: For your solo album, do you have a title or any theme?
Hodgy Beats: Uh, nah. Actually, it’s just going to be Untitled. I had the EP, Untitled the album will just follow it. I might shoot a video for the EP. I’m trying to figure out what song.
