RH First Look: Budda Early

Hip Hop is a music genre dominated by cosigns.  The right stamp from the right person can go a long way.  Bronx rapper Budda Early can X "get cosign" off his checklist, as none other than Kid Capri has signed Budda to his No Kidd'n Records and is now readying the release of his debut LP, From PM To AM.  The "Bronx Borough President" is setting the stage for the LP with the forthcoming Treatment Mixtape, hosted by Kid Capri, and dropping September 16th. RubyHornet linked up with Budda earlier this week.  Check out our First Look after the jump.

RubyHornet: I talked to Kid Capri, and he said that one reason that he sticks with you beyond your skill, is the loyalty you’ve shown to him throughout the years.  Other artists come and go, but you remain.  What is it that has kept you there?

Budda Early
:  I’ve been hanging with Kid for a couple years now, he’s like a big brother.  He’s shown me a lot of things that I need to work on and make happen.  Plus he gives me the opportunity to do me and make my music the way I want to make my music.  All of that is a plus.

RubyHornet: You said Kid Capri lets you make the music the way you want to.  What is that way?

Budda Early:  He lets me go in on my own type of thing.  Whether it’s a hard record or a club record, he gives me the opportunity to do it myself.  He doesn’t stand there and say, ‘do it like this.  Do it like that.’  At the end of the day I’m just being me.  I’m real energetic, and I never stick to one flow or one style of music.  I always let the beat tell me where to go and that helps me create that music.

RubyHornet:  Where does the name Budda Early come from?

Budda Early:  Budda is my nickname.  My mom gave me that when I was a little kid.  I was chubby and she said I looked like Buddha, so she named me Budda.  One day a kid came to me with the Early thing and I said, ‘yeah, that’s some s**t to do.’  One of my homeboys that passed away, that was first person I heard saying that.  ‘Early this, Early that.’  When he brought it to me I said, ‘yeah, that’s hot.  I’m going to run with that.’  Plus my mother’s name is Earliene, so it all just fit.

RubyHornetThe Treatment is supposed to set up From PM to AM.  Most people are working AM to PM, why did you decide to title it PM to AM?

Budda Early:  If you’re going out, you probably get to the club around 10 or 11PM, but you’re leaving at what?  4AM.  Everything happens during the night.  All the good stuff that you’re trying to get into starts in the PM and ends in the AM.  I’m trying to bring people into that little zone.  On my first album I want to give people that good feeling that they go through during those hours.

RubyHornet
:  Kid Capri has a ridiculous work ethic.  How has that rubbed off on you?  What have you gained from working alongside Kid Capri?

Budda Early
: I learned to go HARD!  I’m in the studio all the time.  I’m over 500 songs deep right now.  I keep making records.  I stay inside the studio trying to come up with a new hit, new something a little different than what’s going on.  He taught me to stay busy, cause that’s the only way you’re going to be in this is if you stay busy.
