Artist: Pete Rock Album: NY’s Finest Label: Nature Sounds/Soul Survivor Records You win some and you lose some. That’s the feeling I get after listening to the newest album by legendary producer Pete Rock, the newly released NY’s Finest. It’s Pete’s first LP since 2004’s Soul Survivor II and is an up and down collection of jazz infused and boom bap Hip Hop mixed in with messages of black empowerment and afro-centrism. It’s difficult to knock Pete Rock. The man ushered in a new sound with CL Smooth, influenced a generation of producers and maintained relevancy for near 20 years in Hip Hop. However, his new LP is a collection of hits and misses, of rewinding and fast-forwarding and contains contributions by a majority of emcees who were also at their peak alongside Pete during the mid and late 90’s. Overall, NY’s Finest is a solid collection that’s rooted in the sound that Pete perfected and that sparked many a love affair with Hip Hop. But it leaves me feeling a little like the thrill is gone. Hits: 914 featuring Styles P and Sheek Louch Best Believe featuring Redman We Roll featuring Jim Jones and Max B Misses: Questions featuring Royal Flush The Best Secret featuring Lords of The Underground Made Men featuring Torae
