Peace2: Stop The Madness  E-mail

Stop

It’s been an exciting two weeks in politics, full of many unexpected developments.  A surprisingly unified Democratic convention concluded with a more specific and tough Obama speech that differed from what we’ve seen, but it may have been Obama’s best moment yet.  John McCain looked cross eyed in selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate, but Palin came out and electrified the republican base with her convention speech, turning what looked like a possible disaster into a good looking move.  We will know how everything plays out in two months, but I’m sure more surprises are on the way.

One thing that has been consistent during the campaigns, however, is America’s obsession with identity politics.  Race and gender have been all the rage.  More often than not the dialogue has been destructive, but that hasn’t stopped the American media from feasting on every moment. Just notice the never-ending loop of stories trying to get people wound up.  If you supported Hilary Clinton, you were probably another white feminist eager to jump over black men in the affirmative action race, ready to keep them in their place.  If you supported Barack Obama, you were probably a man (white or black), or a self-hating woman, that couldn’t bear the thought of a woman in power.  And if you were a black woman, oh good lord, you had to choose between being authentically female and being authentically black.

It’s been gnawing at me for a while but I finally sat down and asked myself, ‘what is this all about?’  The answers have been surprising, but they all lead to one conclusion.  We need to stop the madness.  White woman, black man, black woman, white man: we need to stop the madness.

casio g-shock men in rescue orange

Casio G-Shock "Men in Rescue Organge" Pack features some very cool G-Shocks in some of their newer models. The watches take their color scheme form the uniforms of the three different rescue teams, the Mudman, Gulfman, and Riseman. The predomient color is rescue orange, but the Mudman has a black face with an orange strap. On top of the cool color scheme, these models are able to run on solar power and synchronize via radio frequency. That sounds crazy, def on my wish list...Check out more pics below...

style

So, guys it's your turn this week. The weather is changing and so should your style. As always, basic is best when it comes to the pieces that hold your wardrobe together during the cooler months. Here's the list...

As mentioned last week, a nice investment in a quality outerwear garment will always pay off. That said, Max and Dao-Yi of Public School, have hit the nail on the head with their collections. Their wool and preforated leather coats are key items to look for. They are pricey, but so worth it.

Saigon Top

From 2004-2007 I served as the managing editor of SoundSlam.com, a website that I help get off the ground as a senior in college.  During my time at SS, I was also a corps member of Teach For America, teaching elementary school on Chicago's Southside.  This duality was very interesting to me, and my two jobs often bled into each other.  I would utilize Hip Hop often in my classroom, both to actually teach lessons and concepts, as well as connect better with my students.  On the flipside, I found that many of my interviews included questions surrounding education, and the messages that Hip Hop artists were sending to inner-city youth, and my students in particular.  I was able to speak with groundbreaking artists during my stint, and my students would be amazed when I would bring in drops featuring the likes of Busta Rhymes, Common, the Beastie Boys...and the list goes on.

Back in May of 2004, Saigon was a rising star in the Hip Hop game, the equivalent of an unpolished draft pick taken under the wing of an experienced coach.  The coach at that time was Mark Ronson, and Saigon had just completed a prison sentence, and vowed to take what he learned, set it to music, and hope that it positively steered others away from some of the mistakes he made.  The message was going to be transmitted via his forthcoming debut, The Greatest Story Never Told, which at that time was also known as Dear Black America.  In the time since this interview, Mark Ronson has given way to Just Blaze, and Saigon's debut LP is still awaiting its release.  Saigon has had many frustrations with the rap game, and has been in the media spotlight more for his appearance on Entourage, punching Prodigy in the face, and quitting then returning to Hip Hop.

My conversation with Saigon took place in early May of '04 and still remains one of my favorite interviews.  Here he talks in-depth about the origins of his name, America's prison system, the state of Hip Hop at the time, and the message in his music. Check the full interview below.
